Vineyard Notes

Mitsuko’s vineyard, located in the cool Carneros region. Purchased by Clos Pegase as bare land in 1989, the winery has continued to refine the vineyard’s plantings in order to maximize the site’s potential, and subsequently, the Clos Pegase Malbec continues to evolve each year. Mitsuko's Vineyard is 365 acres in the Los Carneros appellation within the Napa Valley. The rolling land of this vineyard has a broad range of soil types, elevations, slopes, and aspects which create countless distinct microclimates. After careful study, eight different grape varieties were planted at this vineyard utilizing every bit of its diversity. In Mitsuko’s Vineyard these varieties receive ideal cooling breezes blowing in from the San Pablo Bay which create the slow, balanced growing season these varieties need to build complexity. With every passing vintage, we continued to refine the vineyard’s plantings in order to maximize the site’s potential, and subsequently, the Clos Pegase Malbec continues to evolve each year.

Winemaker Notes

Grapes were hand picked and delivered to the winery in the cool early morning. After hand sorting, the Malbec juice were given three days to cold soak on skins. Fermentation was then started by gradual heating and inoculating with a yeast strain isolated in the northern Rhone valley. After fourteen days of a warm fermentation the tank was gently pressed to barrel where malolactic fermentation took place. Élevage lasted 18 months, after which the wine was gently filtered and bottled.
