Why You'll Love It

Our Mitsuko’s Vineyard Syrah was harvested at night from the small knoll we refer to as Graveyard Hill, the volcanic origin of which is revealed by the granite and obsidian gravel which studs the soil profile. After destemming, the cold grapes soak in tank prior to the build-up of yeast and the onset of fermentation, permitting gentle extraction of color and tannins from the skins once fermentation commenced. After a prolonged post-fermentation maceration on the skins, the Syrah was drained and pressed to barrels to complete the malolactic conversion. The wine was racked during élevage to aid in natural clarification and to round out its structure, and blended with Petite Sirah to further enhance the mid-palate fruit in the wine. The finished blend was brought out of barrel in April of 2016 just prior to bottling.

Harvest Notes

Fruit initiation began as the dry hot summer of 2013 ended. The mild dormant period combined with substantial rains in February and March gave the vines a vigorous start. As the rains subsided in early April we had successful fruit set and early veriason. Similar to 2013, warm temperatures continued into spring and early summer without significant heat events, prolonged cool periods or measureable rainfall giving us perfect weather for grape growing at the highest quality level. As harvest approached, the combination of warmer days and cooler nights ensured full physiological ripeness of the fruit both in terms of fruit flavor development and tannin maturity together with acidity retention so crucial for fine wine balance; however, because the peak daytime temperatures exceeded those in 2013, this vintage was the earliest in over a decade, essentially commencing for Clos Pegase on September 1st and finishing on October 5th.

Winemaker Notes

A perfect example of what the Carneros region can deliver. Full of spice, blackberries, blueberries, purple violets and a touch of black pepper on the nose. This is followed up by a generous addition of rich mid-palate fruit, underlain by complex notes of wild herbs surrounded by a plush, satisfying texture. The wine finishes with persistent fruit and bold tannins, leaving a lasting impression of substance and power.
